Transfer Planning Tool

Use this checklist to help you stay on track while preparing for College. There may be additional steps needed to complete some items, such as preparing and scheduling placement tests. Always check with your school counselor before applying to College to make sure you haven't missed anything important. The Advising departments at each Virginia Community College can help you figure out the next steps to prepare to transfer to a 4 year University.

Transfer Planning Tool Checklist

Finding a career that interests you is the first step toward a meaningful career. Take a free assessment to find careers that match your interests and work values, so that you will know exactly what education or training you need.
If you are planning to attend a college that requires the SAT or ACT, take or consider taking the necessary tests in the fall.
Visit four-year colleges and universities that interest you. Sign up for a group information session and tour when you visit. If possible, arrange a meeting with an admissions officer and arrange to observe a class related to your potential major.
Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid(FAFSA) and have the reports sent to the schools you are considering. Check the priority deadlines for the colleges you plan to attend. Apply as early as possible!
Conduct research into scholarships early in the school year and submit scholarship applications. In addition to the scholarships found in the Wizard, be sure to check out those that are offered by community organizations, high schools, professional associations and national organizations. See your school counselor or career center representative for scholarship listings.
If you are attending a community college, fill out an online application and carefully answer the questions for the Application for In-State Tuition, Meet with a community college counselor or attend an information session to learn about placement tests, financial aid, and course registration.
If you are interested in being guaranteed admission to the university of Virginia, Virginia Tech, the college of William and Mary or 20 more colleges and universities in Virginia, then check out the guaranteed admission agreements between the Virginia's Community College and a wide range of public and private colleges and universities in Virginia.
After submitting your FAFSA, follow-up with the college to check on the status of your financial aid.
